Nightly Hair Wrap-Up

So, since I'm not woven, I'm not rockin a twisted up-do, or protective style, and I'm whippin' my free-flowing  locks in the wind, I have to protect it from my tumultuous sleeping habits. My mom taught me this when I went natural in college. She would have me section manageable portions of hair, and braid them. I didn't feel like braiding, and honestly it's the same effect. I took parts of my hair, sectioned it off, dipped enough shea butter to coat my hair LIGHTLY enough to moisturize it through the night and not weigh it down or clog my hair follicles, take the parts of sectioned off hair and two strand twist. Some people will do this in a more organized fashion in their head, I'm not one of those people.

I look very much like Buckwheat, but my hair is protected through the night to preserve the curl, and moisture.

I posted on Facebook that I wish I had smell o'facebook because this smells sooooo good! I am going to try this on my hands and feet, slather my tootsies in this wonderfully smelling awesome creamy goodness and wrap them up in some nice socks overnight. I bet my stuff will be super soft and sensuously delicious smelling by next morning. mmmm. num yummy. I can't get enough of my shea butter!!

Alicia Keys ft. Eve- Speechless

Swizz Beats puts out another great Monster Monday joint. It's taking me back a couple years when I would go up in the Chinatown Express from DC or Boston to BK. I shake my head because there is an unmistakable familiarity with the sound of certain East Coast joints, that distinctive beat, the chords, that East Coast lover's vibe... You only recognize it if you've had it. As I play this on repeat, I still feel every bit of my late night travels, the empty, cold, buses; the lights shining off the factories lining the horizon, the empty black highways, and bright yellow lines, the tollways, the silent strangers, my envy of other people with mp3 players, and me only with my thoughts, the lonely cab ride down the quiet streets of Flatbush, Eastern Parkway, Church Ave, Linden... the confusion I had in my heart, and the mistakes in love I made during those YEARS of going back and forth. The beat of my heart matches the beat of the baseline, and my heart begins to fill with tears with a pressure only my eyes can relieve. It doesn't help that Speechless has the beat of Usher & Jadakiss Throwback, I used to play on repeat over and over and over again back in the day. I have such a torrid love affair with Brooklyn, (if it's understandable, that it's the Big to my crazy internal Sex and the City Carrie/Sam/Charlotte/Miranda mashup) the remnants of my love, my crazy love situations are all that's left of me and BK, and it's all played out in my mental jukebox. This is one of those songs I'll be playing on repeat for the next few hours... reminiscing.

We all sat shocked last night as I announced the news that Teena Marie MIGHT have passed. While I personally couldn't rock too much of Teena's new stuff, I asked my fam what songs came to mind when they thought about Teena, born as Mary Christine Brockert. May she rest in peace in God's loving arms. Here is what we came up with along with some old school jams that don't get play anymore. She shall forever be immortalized.

DJ Wick-it returns from the lab with this sanctioned slice of soul-hop just in time for Big Boi to tell his friends "Stank you very much" this Christmas.

Two of the greatest albums to emerge from 2010 get mashed together in what is now known as 'The Brothers of Chico Dusty'.

Featuring beats crafted from The Black Keys latest album 'Brothers' and vocals from Sir Lucious Leftfoot's 'The Son of Chico Dusty', this album is nothing but pure-cut- butter.

    Spin -
❝ There's no lack of genre-crossing album mashups, and while most are for-kicks novelty, some are much more meaningful, like the Beatles-Jay-Z mix The Grey Album, which launched the career of Danger Mouse. Here's another one definitely worth a listen: SPIN Artists of the Year the Black Keys mashed with OutKast rapper Big Boi.

Aptly-titled The Brothers of Chico Dusty, the mixtape combines two of SPIN's 40 Best Albums of 2010: Big Boi's solo LP Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty and the Keys' Brothers. Whoever's responsible for this gem -- apparently, it's anonymous artist who goes by "Wick-it" -- shouldn't slip back onto the web unrecognized. ❞

    The Smoking Section -
❝ As twisted as the idea sounds, turntabilist Wick-It’s ballsy concoction yields pretty surprising results as Antwan Patton sounds like a lost Keys’ band member. ❞

    The Nashville Scene -
❝ Now that The Black Keys live here — and since ATL is just a hop and a skip from Music City — we’re going to go ahead and claim this one. It’s a perfect (semi-) local storm. We told you before about how Big Boi thinks local turntablist Wick-It the Instigator is dope. Well, now there’s even more reason for a bromance to blossom between the two ballers (It's started). Wick-It has mashed up The Black Keys’ Brothers and Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty — both of which are already getting a lot of love on year-end best-of lists (just ask Grimey’s). ❞

From my heart to yours...

One of the few personal posts I've made... Here goes...

I've had some of my step mom's tea... Hers is STRONG!!!! I thought I had a handle on the strong tea business... she told me she used FIVE bags!!! Hot dogg!! It tasted like caffeinated sugar, oh so delicious! But now that I've had my tea stimulant, my mind is boppin like a Michael Jackson video on that wii game we've been playing. ALL OVER THE PLACE!

I'm thinking about my punkin's bday party that we're having next week... He wants a Michael Jackson theme, but it's late in the game... and I don't know anyone who can whip up a Michael Jackson jacket cake with fondant on such a short notice and within reasonable financial constraint. a la:

BUT, we are gonna be rockin out to the MJ Experience and Dance Party. The kids love it! (I do too)! LOL! Daddy even danced tonight... but now my shoulder and arm, and neck all hurt. LOL! Hopefully the fam turns out for the babie's Big 5th Bday. Cake and dinner... Hopefully I'll cook... Hit up some place, bake some chicken, some corn, black eyed peas, collard greens, sweet tater pies, and of course, blue bell ice cream. Do some rice... might have to hit up Singon and get a pan of dirty rice and freeze it... make some LIQ beverage, and ring in the New Year right... right after Watch Night Service. Happy Bday Big C!!!

Also thinking my toes are cold as shit! I got this   heater finally to work, and my toes are damn near   frozen off... and my mental juke box is playing that   Rickey Smiley. My toes fell off... Two of my toes     dun fell off. I'm chuckling to myself, cause that dude   is hilarious. And isn't he supposed to be putting out a   new prank call CD this year? Like in October,   2010? It's December, almost January 2011... where   is that CD? Hmmm... Anyway. I digress...

AND THE RANDOMNESS CONTINUES...

I packed up the children and made a run a little bit West today in hopes of a fantastic sale at Dillards. I must have missed the memo that there was nothing there of interest. I could have saved gas and a  rather expensive lunch . BUT New York & Co. had a  fantastic sale going on, with 70% off items in addition to an extra 10% off... Teachers didn't get the regular 15% today, but all is well. I got a few shirts for less than $10 dollars a whop. Shopping is not my favorite past time, so I can miss the fashionista's euphoric shopping experience. That's not my thing. But I was rather enjoying my hair as we perused through the various stores. I still shall gather my coins and attempt to get that asymmetrical blouse from Shaundra. Merry Kwanza gifts for me! That, a vacuum my momma didn't get the texts I sent her about, Coach Poppy fragrance, and a belt for the man child. He lost his good belt... Dang homey, how do you lose a belt?

This is going from random to slightly weird... but that occurs when your an melodious anomaly I guess. *Michael Jackson lyrics keep playing through my head as an indication of playing two days worth of The Experience*
I loved my hair today. I keep going back to that. For the first time, I wore it down, not fro'd out. YAY!!! It wasn't pinned, not pulled back in a pony tail, not woven, not twisted, not tucked, not put, up with a binder clip (yes, I've used a binder clip to hold my hair... cause I can do that...). It looked awesome, and I'm nervous that it won't be this fantastic looking tomorrow. I don't wanna twist it back up cause that takes FOREVAR for me to do, but I probably should. My hair has held up today- the twist out, the big'ness of it, the moisture, the fabulosity, I'm just all in on my hair.

I think I shall follow suit, behind Daddy and the dog and head to bed... oh wait! I gave the bed to the babies so we could play wii down here. Ok, so I shall head to sofa. I slept good on in last night. We gonna try it again I guess... I believe I will have visions of

And with that, a dying battery, the ever present urge to utilize the facilities, the cold that's setting in my sore body, and a sleepy brain, a taste of one slice of german chocolate cake, and the fact that I have to pick up downstairs, I bid you adieu. Have a wonderful night. Enjoy the downloads, forward to your friends, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite without you biting back. Thanks for reading!

My crown and my glory

So today is a great hair day!! I took out Keek's twists she did for me for Christmas, and used my homemade shea butter. Got pix cause I couldn't stop loving my hair today! For the recipe, check the page over there somewhere. You'll find it. It's there. I promise.

My hair is soooo soft, my cousin - who is a desiring-to-be-naturalista kept complimenting my hair and she kept wanting to play in it. When we got in the car to hit up the not so salesy- after Christmas sales I had to put on Willow Smith. We all whipped our hair... whatever texture or state of being it was.

iNK... BLoG: Teena Marie Died??:

A very good source has informed me that Singer Teena Marie has died. No details at this moment and the report is still unconfirmed as the source is very distraught but we will keep you posted. WDAS radio said that this true via Patty Jackson, but still nobody confirm it. if so she was one of the greats in music

Natural Stores

Went to the Granery St in town today, and I had so much fun with the man child putting mixes together for products. Peppermint oil, tee tree oil, jojoba oil, real vitamin E oil. I want to try out Moroccan oil, and wonder if I can find it outside of "normal" avenues back home. Either way, I can't wait to get home and look for some natural mom and pop stores round the way.

I'm gonta have fun concocting up stuff for my hair and my skin. Hip Hip hooray!

PJ Morton – Independently Major | Mixtape Review & Free DL from SoulCulture UK

DIGGING THESE FRESH NEW TRAX

PJ Morton – Independently Major | Mixtape Review Free DL

December 19, 2010 by Aamir Yaqub

The very talented PJ Morton hits us with his latest release in the form of the mixtape Independently Major. PJ Morton has been around on the independent soul scene for a good few years now and has also made a name for himself in the gospel scene, writing for the like of Kierra ‘Kiki’ Sheard. This mixtape is a good return to the soulful side of things for PJ, yet it doesn’t totally abandon his gospel roots and influences, which can be heard in his vocals on ‘Lifetime’ and on the turnarounds and bridge of ‘Yours.’

Generally, I felt Morton has done well with this mixtape, however there are a few numbers on it that I wasn’t a fan of. I found although it was nice overall, ‘Don’t Ever Leave’ was slightly repetitive. ‘Change My mind’ was more R&B geared and although it showed diversity, I found it was at best OK. ‘History’ begins promisingly and then ends up dragging slightly.

On the whole, this mixtape is built upon some very nice grooves and strong riffs/motifs. Whether it’s a sparse arrangement, like on ‘3rd Degree’ or ‘Mathematics’ with it’s notable bass work, PJ Morton has a good groove based foundation for the majority of the tracks on this project.
PJ Morton shows how strong a writer he is, especially with the frankness of his lyrics on ‘I Need Your Love’ and ‘Growin’ Up’ and I feel this is what helps him enagage with his listener most. The former song has very interesting instrumentation and chord progressions to boot.

Amongst my favourites were ‘Galaxy’ a track that’s opening moves a little like Stevie Wonder’s ‘Another Star,’ with nice horn lines (that feature throughout this mixtape) and once again, notable bass work to make it bob along nicely. ‘Give It To Me’ is in contrast laidback, has a drum pattern that is a bit Kanye West with very tasty piano and vocals that make this a joint that oozes soul.

‘You Make Me Smile’ was a track apparently penned for Brandy, however Morton decided to keep it for itself. It has all the hallmarks of a Brandy track and you can envision her doing her magic on this well written song with a very heart warming sentiment. ‘Sunshine In The Morning’ is a neo soul track with a lower end reminiscent of D’Angelo.

Amongst my favourites, ‘Yours’ is perhaps the track that standouts most to me on this offering. Seemingly out of nowhere, we get a taste of PJ Morton’s sweet falsetto and this track would equally be at home on a Bilal album. It has a lovely catchy chorus and the Gospel influence is very much in tact.

To be frank, I find it a shame we didn’t get more upfront vocal production, I feel like PJ Morton has a really nice vocal tone, with carefully chosen and executed ad-libs, however this didn’t come across half as well as it should have. At times I felt the quality of the sounds used weren’t that good either or at least could have been mixed better, as I felt that this detracted from some of the stronger songs on the album. All in all, I await PJ Morton’s next release and am impressed with this one.

INTRODUCING: Neo Soul Redux- Randomness on Repeat, Year End Review, part 1

I have a bout of writer's block in part because I'm tired and I am craving something sweet to eat desperately! AHK!!!!

With 2 weeks exactly til the start of next year (and my punkie poo's bday) I'm feebly attempting to chronicle all the music I had in rotation on repeat this year. I was finally able to put together my first list.

This year was an interesting one to say the least... traveling back and forth hither and yon, adventures galore, in love and out of love, plenty of alone time, and nothing really exciting happening as my life is actually quite boring and very quiet. Sooooooo.... on my many adventures, even if just to the store, I had a playlist to accompany. At first, I was rockin out to the burned CD mixtape joints because I abhor the radio, then I FINALLY got an mp3! Don't laugh at me, I'm always late to trends- I'm sooo not the trend follower- more like the beat my own path kinda against- the- grain person.

But anyway... artists I simply liked, I got to know better and fell in LOVE... case in point: CEE-LO- Stray Bullets Mix Tape... OMG! I can't listen to that album without feeling a certain way, and even had SuperWoman Theme Song as my ringtone most of the year.

Went to a few concerts this year, more than I had in my entire life: Jill Scott, Maxwell, Ledisi. Ledisi rocked the Arena in her 5" platform fire engine red pumps, all while singing her gospeldeliciousness with crazy vocals! I remember like it was last night! Maxwell and Jill... *swoon* that's all I can say about that.

All in all, I let music touch my soul this year, filter its way through my dermis, all the way past my marrow, on through my veins, down into the depths of my soul. Music defined me this year, it was a living, breathing, talking, singing, rhythmic representation of my life... from songs like Alicia Keys ft. Beyonce- put it in a love song, to Paul Jones I won't complain; Melanie Fiona - Ay YoKirk Franklin's Blessing in the Storm to Chris Brown Dueces... Eminem's Love the Way you Lie to Trey Songz We can't be Friends. Kem Why Would You Stay w/ LyricsDrake, Miss Me; Different Times - Raphael Saadiq F. Goapele/Ledisi
had significant impact on what you see before you now...

The goofy, strange, eclectic, outright misunderstood, neosoulhippyesque, anomelodious playlist is here.

My oh so esoteric (and quite Anomelodious) Christmas wish list

My new fav movie

Shaundra at Dinjii Boutique, a quaint misses boutique in Northwest Houston, is holding my last coveted Christmas gift to myself, and tomorrow will send a pic of the glorious piece of art I have been longing for since I saw it last week in the shop just so I can post here for you to see! I am so stricken with financial malpractice, I had to wait until this week to get my goodies. It's a lovely piece of artwork that I'm going to rock come New Year's Eve/ New Year's Night in prayerfully my new dress from the boutique as well!
Check out my girl Kim rockin the dress at the Dinjii fashion show in November. Those were some bad "A" boots too!
Shaundra, who much like myself, is a curvy girl, opened a boutique for women just like us, who typically didn't have success finding chic clothes through normal avenues that would fit our body types. She has created an awesome haven filled with blouses and accessories, handbags, and jewels that if I could... would have filled up my closet LAST FRIDAY NIGHT!

“At Dinjii, I wanted to create a real boutique environment for every woman by carrying misses and plus-sizes” says owner, Webb.  “Many times when I would visit boutiques, I knew they didn’t carry my size, so all I would come out with would be a piece of jewelry or handbag. I want to dispel that myth that the concept of ‘boutiques’ is just for women who are a size 0 or size 8.”  At Dinjii every woman gets to experience being at a boutique. Dinjii’s philosophy is to make sure each client has a complete look that is accommodating to their shape and style, offering personal styling to each and every client that walks through the doors for FREE.  Webb specializes in knowing what works for different body types and skin tones."

After meeting by happenstance at a model call I would have never expected to be called for, Shaundra asked me to rip the runway for her at the hair show. From the time I put on her outfit, and then when I saw that "little black dress" Kim had on, I KNEW IT WAS ON!!!!

Just featured in the Northwest Community Impact Newspaper's December Holiday Gift Giving Guide, her handbag was one of the statement pieces! Be sure to check out the article: http://impactnews.com/northwest-houston/334-guides/10854-holiday-gift-guide Congrats Shaundra!
Asymmetrical T w/my name ALL over it!

Shaundra at Dinjii

She has the cutest asymmetrical black and white piece that I would have snatched "immejiately" had my personal funds been readily available to rock out with a pair of black jeggins and some fierce, but comfortable, ankle boots.  Each piece in her store is actually quite affordable, which is as important to me as the fashions itself because it's not THAT easy to find reasonable prices on great clothes for "big girls," and I'm a mommy and pet owner, so I usually come last on the list of things to buy. I know one thing, I haven't bought a single piece of clothing since before August. I'm down 30 pounds, and for Christmas, I'm going to rock the scene in some Dinjii fashions!
New December Arrival

Handmade Couture T's

LUNCH!!

Fresh Spinach leaves with lump crab meat, cilantro, real bacon bits, pepperoni. Topped with Caesar dressing.

Delicious! A nice light, fresh flavor with a little spice kick from the pepperoni. Perfect afternoon snack.

5 more days UNTIL 15 DAYS OFF!!!! and I'm feelin kinda kinky... with my hair that is.

I'm sitting here debating to complete this blog post or not, while I have a load of laundry waiting to meet the soap and water and twist and turn itself to cleanliness and I have a sink full of dishes that are not going to place themselves in the dishwasher.

Moist curls
My uuber cost cutting Christmas tree is put together and half way decorated. I have my minimal thing going right now. Garland, lights, 6 silver jingle bells. Mamma treated me and Big C to Christmas decorations when she came down. Her visit was great. She left with shea butter and vitamin e oil for her hair, she went NATURAL!!! *cheering* She cut off the perm, and was complaining about what we all do- SHRINKAGE! So, she wants to twist it, and wanted to know what to use... YEAH fellow blogger chicas and newfound naturalista friends, I was able to help her find a simple solution and she is going to make her some compound cream to twist her hair.

For moisture, I have been using my Taliah Waajid Protective Mist, several drops of Africa's Best Olive and Clove Oil and some Taliah Curl Lotion (that's really a mousse). Works like a charm for my hair: super soft, major body, and moisture that keeps through the day. ALSO, the SMELL IS ORGASMIC!!! (I love good smells!!)

A digression: FOR MORE INFO ON MY STYLIST AND COLORIST, CHECK OUT SUNSHINE AT NATURALLY BORN HERE IN HOUSTON. 713-384-1642; 9000 South West Freeway Houston, Texas. She is a natural and has hair styles for locs for days. She is the best! Locs, Kinky Twist, Starter Locs, Braids, Twist and She also styles Sista Locs. She rocked out my 'frohawk style by braiding up my sides and two strand twisting the rest for Thanksgiving and the Nzuri hair show, and I've been playing with different styles like french rolls, twist out to the side, or big twists up the back since. she got frisky and fought the good fight with my hair & won when she pinned it in a style that took 5 minutes, FIVE MINUTES! and lasted a whole entire 8 days!!!!!!

AND WE'RE BACK: I met Toya from Creativation at the Nappiology expo in Dallas, but I couldn't afford to buy her whipped shea butter, BUT thank God for Christmas stipends because now I CAN! She has wonderful "flavors" like exotic orange and peaceful sand and vanilla gem- WHICH IS WHAT I'M GETTING, and I'm looking forward to mixing it with my clove oil and the other mosturizers to see what it does with my hair. For more info check out Toya's website: http://www.creativationisme.com/ or http://unitycollections.com/pure-unrefined-shea-butter-p-158.html
